Septic tanks are used for the treatment of residual waters similar to the urban ones, for locations that can not connect to the main canalization system. In most countries most of the rural homes and some residential neighbourhoods can not connect to the main canalization system.
The septic tank is built with fiber glass armed polyester tanks, the properties of the material used offer the tank a long life time and a great resistance to corossion as well as being impervious.
The septic tank are made out of two distinct compartments that communicate with each other, the sedimentation area and the decomposing area because of this the septic tanks can also be used as sand separators through sedimentation.
Residual waters go through the first compartment (sedimentor) where the heavier matter is sedimented on the bottom because of it’s weight and the lighter side will float above. Water goes through the other compartment (digestor) through special holes applied in the separating wall at a medium height so the water can be as clean as possible.
The same process then repeats it’self in the second compartment tough on a much lower scale. In both compartments while the sedimentation is taking place there is also a decomposing of the organic material taking place.
The evacuation of clear water is being done through a tube on the median side of the second compartment, however this water can’t be evacuated in surface waters but must be introduced in an active mud purifier.
The capacity of a IMHOFF septic tank is determined by taking in account the average 200 litres per occupant per day.
